A Heroes Legacy
You don't believe in ghosts, do you? I've seen one... That night haunts me in my dreams every night,
the night when the ghost came to our house.
"Amy, get Chaotica and yourself outta here!" My dad yelled through the flames, while trying to hold the thing back. I had never seen anything like it, a body made out of dark-blue metal and eyes glowing red.
"Metal... this time I´m ging to make sure you stay dead!" Dad yelled as he launched himself at the metallic copy
of himself. Metal didn´t even seem to be surprised and just hit my father to the ground again.
"Sonic! Look up!" My mom screamed in a high-pitched voice, as Metal Sonic made another attempt to attack
him from above.
I could see Metal lifting dad by the neck, trying to choke him, but then mom ran at him with her big hammer
and pounded him in the head. The hit was devestating and Metal fell backwards, desperatly trying to regain balance. Mom threw the hammer away and helped dad on his feet.
"Thanks Amy..."
"Anything for you Sonikku..."
Then it came, a scene I will never forget. Metal had grabbed mom´s hammer and swung it at them. It was
a perfect hit and both mom and dad fell to the ground and I screamed, screamed with all the power my ten-year
old body could muster. Metal simply turned away and dissappeared.
16-year old Chaotica the Hedgehog woke up screaming, tears rolling down her face. Since the accident that put Sonic and Amy in a coma, Chaotica was decleared orphan and homeless. Her parents friends had discussed the matter and decided that it was best if she was to be raised in a steady family and she was addopted by Knuckels and Rouge who already had kids and a steady relationship.
I was cold-sweating and trembeling as I looked at the bedtime clock, only six a.m., nobody else was awake.
I ran my hand through my soaked yellow quills and then tried to go back to sleep, only to be woken up an
hour later by Ruby and Sapphire, Knux´s and Rouge´s twin girls.
"Get up, get up! We´re supposed to get to school!" They both yelled in unison.
"I don´t wanna..." I grunted with my face in my pillow, well awere that this meant that they would bring out their secret weapon.
"Ready?" they grinned at each other and then they poured the bucket of cold water over my head.
"I´ll get you for that!" I yelled as I chased them towards the kitchen, where Rouge already was sitting.
She looked at my soaked head and looked a little surprised.
"Ruby, Sapphire, I told you that you only were allowed to use that trick on your father." She said, looking seariusly at the 15-year old girls.
Both the twins looked a little ashamed over being caught and I had to supress a giggle. Then Rouge broke out
into a smile and looked at me.
"Good morning sunshine." She said,"Better hurry up or you´re gonna get late."
"Will do!" I said, immediatly feeling better.
Then Knuckels walked in the kitchen, drowsy as ever.
"... mornin´..." he somewhat growled.
"Well, we better get going, huh." I said looking at the twins."Come on!"
Chaotica, Ruby and Sapphire walked to the end of Angel Island, where they lived, and looked down. Then Chaotica grabbed the twins hands and jumped. Using the chaos energy she was born with, she gracefully flew them to their school and then rushed towards her own school. When she arrived outside Station Square Senior High she heared the bells ring in for class.
"Crap, I´m late!" I thought while rushing towards our classroom.
I knocked on the door and heard a familiar voice. "Sorry... pant... that I´m late...pant..." I said as soon as
I came inside, wondering if I would get scolded again. But when I looked up it wasn´t our old, grumpy teacher standing in front of the class. It was...
"Tails!?" I said, feeling more than surprised. Still wondering what he was doing here, I took my seat next to Darkness, my best friend and Shadow´s kid.
"Where have you been?" she asked me as I sat down. "The principal was just telling us about our new math,
and mechanics-teacher."
"Tails is going to teach here?" I asked still surprised.
"Seems so." Darkness said simply. "But you gotta admit, he seems nicer than our previous teacher."
She whispered.
The rest of the schoolday flowed on as usual, but at the end of the day Tails caught up with me as I was leaving.
"Hey, Chaotica!" he called after me. He didn´t really look like the Tails I knew when he was wearing a teachers uniform.
"Hi..." I replaid
"So... how was school today?" he asked
"As usual."
"Where are you headed now?"
"To the hospital, it´s visiting hours." I said. I had been going three times a week to the hospital to be with mom
and dad, not that it really mattered, they were in a deep coma, they couldn´t know if I even was there.
Yet it felt satisfying just to be with them, it gave me a sense of safety in some way.
"Well, I´ll be seeing you in class tomorrow." He said as I began to walk. "Oh, and Chaotica, if you ever need
to talk to someone about it, I´ll be free to listen."
"Thanks..." I said as I hurried towards Station Square Hospital.
When she got to the hospital she hurried inside to the receptionst.
"I got a visiting time at room 496." she said while trying to regain a steady breath.
"Go ahead." The old echidna said. As Chaotica rushed up the stairs, the receptionist turned to her friend in
the desk next to her, "Poor thing, she´s been visiting her parents three times a week for six years now."
"What´s wrong with them?" The young fox-girl asked.
"They´re in a coma..." She answered quietly.
When I got to room 496, I couldn´t help but thinking about how much I really missed them. I quietly opened
the door and went in and there they were, as they had been for the past six years, lying on two beds next
to each other.
"Hi mom, hi dad..." I whispered, watching them. They looked so peaceful, lying there with their eyes closed and wearing those white hospital outfits. I could feel tears welling up in my eyes and my vision became blurry,
but I quickly wiped it away.
"Tails is teaching at our school now." I said, as if they could hear me. "And Ruby and Sapphire poured ice-cold water over me again..." The tears were burning in my eyes and I couldn´t hold them back any longer.
"Mommy! Daddy! I miss you so much..." I started sobbing, while lying next to dad, stroking his royal-blue quills.
I watched the different screens on the side of their beds, it was heartbeat, breahting, brain activity etc.
They hadn´t changed, they were still showing the same results.
"Why did you leave me?..." I whispered, trying to hold back another flood of tears.
I went to the bathroom to clean away the last tears, but when I was cleaning my face I saw something in the
water, something that looked like a pair of eyes, a pair of emerald-green liquid eyes. I screamed and fell backwards, knocking my head into the wall, then I got to my senses and looked again, the eyes were gone.
It had already become dark when I was heading back home and I was feeling both tired and scared.
"How am I supposed to make it back to Angel Island?" I thought. "I can´t manage two more steps!"
Then I saw Tails walking towards me.
"Need a lift?" he said with a grin
"Do I ever!" I said, too tired to ask what he was doing there. We got into the Tornado and took off towards
Angel Island.
Neither one of us said anything on the way back and my mind was still fixed on the eyes in the water,
had it just been my imagination or...
"Prepare for landing!" Tails shouted as we closed in on the floating island and with one, two and three bumps
the plane had stopped. As I suspected, Knuckels was outside waiting for me, but for some reason he seemed
all other then happy about Tails beeing there.
"Chaotica, get back to the house. Rouge is waiting with dinner ready." Knuckels said but he never took his eyes
off Tails. My curiosity forced me to hide in a bush to listen at them.
Knuckels looked around to make sure that nobody was around, then he suddenly rushed at Tails and lifted him
off the ground, holding his shirt.
"You´ve gotta a lotta nerves, showing up here!" He said with a tone that meant: "I want to tear you into pieces!"
"I just... gasp... gave her a ride... home..." Tails said while struggeling to get free.
"You shouldn´t even be talking to that poor kid after what you´ve put her through!" Knuckels growled.
"That incident wasn´t my fault!" Tails yelled in a sudden outburst of anger. "Why would I want to hurt my best friend?!"
"It is because of your little "experiments" that Sonic and Amy are lying in that hospital!" Knuckels voice was trembeling as if he was close to tears, then he dropped Tails on the ground. "Leave now and don´t you dare
come back here."
My mind was going into a blurr, what did Knuckels mean by "It is because of your little "experiments" that Sonic and Amy are lying in that hospital!" For a moment I completely forgot about the eyes in the sink. I ran back to
the house before Knux could spot me and inside Rouge was waiting.
"Hi sunshine, dinner´s ready." She said smiling.
"I´m not hungry..." I grunted, my mind was still fixed on Knux´s words.
"Aw, what´s bothering you? She asked with a concerned tone.
"Rouge, can I ask you something?"
"Of course, anything."
"How did Metal Sonic get back to life after my mom and dad blasted him here?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. I´ve never seen Rouge act like that, she looked terrified and just stared at me.
"Chaotica, are you sure you want to know?" She asked when she snapped out of her trance.
"I´m sure, I want the real truth." I said firmly.
"It was actually an accident..." she began. "After that your parents destroyed him, we gathered all the parts
and gave them to Tails, since he´s the mechanical wiz. We asked him to make something useful out of it,
butTails thought that it would be a shame to ruin such an advanced artificial brain, so instead of turning Metal
into microwave he rebuilt his body."
"Why would he do that?" I asked, still stunned from what I was hearing.
"I guess that he thought he could re-program Metal´s brain, thus turning him good, but we have all seen that
he was wrong..." She stopped, wiping a silent tear of her cheek.
I went to my room in complete shock. "Tails was willing to risk the lives of his friends for that piece of scrap?" Suddenly I understood why Knuckels was so angry at Tails, he blaimed Tails for my situation. I went to bed
altough it only was 8:30 p.m. and I slowly drifted off to sleep.
Once again I found myself seeing the same scene in my nightmare and once again mom and dad were hit to
the ground, but then something happened that filled me with fear. Metal didn´t turn back and dissappeare,
instead he came towards me, I couldn´t run nor scream just watch as the horrific machine came closer.
Then something happened, someone stepped in between me and Metal, protecting me. The stranger was tall
and had a shimmering colour of aqua-marine blue, his body constantly moving, almost as if he was liquid.
With one blast of energy he fought off Metal and then he turned towards me and I could se his big green emerald eyes...
"Who are you?!" I screamed as I woke up. My room was pitch-black and the bedtime-clock was showing four a.m.
Later when the twins came to wake me up, I was too tired and angry for any stupid jokes.
"If you even think about getting the bucket, I swear that I´ll drop on the way to school!" I growled without looking at them. Then I turned my head and saw that they looked completly shocked and I just went to breakfast without them.
"Mornin´..." I was somewhat surprised to find Knuckels out of bed this early.
"...mutter... right..." I quietly growled, trying to keep my temper.
"Rouge told you everything, didn´t she?" Knuckels let out a deep sigh. "I knew she´d tell you sooner or later..."
Tears were beginning to blurr my vision and I didn´t want to look at him, even if I knew he was right.
Suddenly it just burst, I couldn´t hold it back any more.
"Why...sob... He was dad´s best friend...huck... his best friend..." I was sobbing uncontrolably and big hot tears were sliding down my cheeks.
"I... I don´t know... I don´t know..." Knuckels said, looking as if he was about to cry himself.
I went to school alone that day, Rouge took the twins (since their wings weren´t fully functional yet).
The whole way down to school I wondered what I should tell Tails when I saw him.
For once I was in time and I quickly got seated.
"Wow, you look beat!" Darkness said looking at me. My quills were pointing in all directions, I had bags under
my eyes and a pale face.
"... sigh... can we discuss this later?..." I asked as I was in no mood to spill my heart on my desk in front of everybody.
At lunch break I brought Darkness to an empty classroom and told her everything, from the eyes in the sink
to the truth about Metal. She looked even more surprised when I told her about my dream.
"I... I think I know that guy in your dream" she said, looking a bit nervous. Come by my house after school
and we can see for sure, Okay?"
I accepted the invitation and went back to class.
After the schoolday had ended, the both hedgehog girls were sprinting towards Darkness house, where she lived with her dad, Shadow. When they stepped through the door a welcoming voice greeted them.
"Hi honey, how was school?" Shadow asked, peeping his head out of the kitchen. "Oh, and hello to you too."
He said smiling at Chaotica.
"Dad, can I use your computer for a while?" Darkness asked, trying to make her voice sound as sweet as possible.
"What for?" Shadow asked, suddenly sounding suspicous. Daughter or no daughter, Shadow wouldn´t change.
"I´m gonna need to browse through the picture files of the emerald chamber."
"... sigh... fine, but just half a hour."
I wondered what she could possibly have found there, but I went along. As we browsed through the files there
were pictures of the wall that told the story of an ancient tribe of echidnas and a water-beast. I felt a chill down
my spine as I remembered my latest dream.
"Here it is!" She shouted in excitement. "Isn´t this the guy?" She was pointing at a picture of the water-beast
and I nodded.
"It´s him alright..." The letters beneath the creature spelled "Chaos" and I could faintly remember my father
talking about that Chaos had saved him and my mother from Metal once.
"Chaos... why does that name sound so familiar?" I asked myself. Then it hit me like a slap in the face, Chaos... Chaotica! I was stunned, my parents had named me after him? He must have helped them bigtime if they had
done that.
"I... I, uh, have to get back home!" I said as I began to move.
"But..."
I was already outside. I took a running start and then I launched off into the sky, towards Angel Island.
I had to know more about Chaos and I knew exactly who to ask.
"Knuckels!" I yelled the minute I got inside, causing him almost to choke on his coffee.
"Whoa, whats the emergency?" he asked with a surprised look.
"I need to know everything you can tell me about Chaos!" I told him.
"How did you find out about Chaos?" He asked, suddenly looking dead serious.
"He saved my parents, now I want to know what happened!"
Knuckels told me everything (see. Chaotic Love :P), how Chaos saved my parents and how he loaded them
with chaos energy, thus giving me the apperance I had today.
Suddenly I could hear something that sounded like a rocket engine, I went outside and looked. I was speechless
as I saw what was causing the noise, high in the sky a blue metallic robot with glaring red eyes was flying by. Without really knowing how, I just felt deep inside that he was heading towards my parents. I ran as fast as
I could to the end of the island and jumped, then with every drop of power I had I zoomed past Metal and
headed for the hospital.
"Please, let them be okay..." I whispered as I closed in on the tall, white building.
I just dashed inside, past the receptionist and straight for room 496 and I yanked the door open... Nobody
was there except my mom and dad, and I was beginning to wonder if Metal wasn´t after them at all.
Then Tails suddenly showed up in the door-opening and yelled:
"Chaotica, get out of here! He´s coming!" Tails looked really scared and I instantly understood who he was
talking about. With an ear-piercing blast Metal blew the entire outer wall away, as he hovered outside the hospital.
"Finally, my revenge will be complete!" Metal said as he saw me. "The entire Hedgehog Legacy in one swoop!"
He leaned forward and then blasted off against me with his fist out. I closed my eyes and waited for the deadly blow, but it didn´t come. I opened my eyes to find Chaos in front of me, trapping Metal´s fist between his hands and glaring hatefully at the robot. Then Metal did something unexpected, he shot electricity through his body
and since Chaos was made of water, he was an easy target for the shocks.
"Leave him alone!" I yelled as I kicked the metallic beast in the chest, to my surprise, instead of breaking my
foot, I sent Metal flying out of the room.
"Foolish hedgehog, that won´t stop me!" Metal screamed as he charged at me again.
Out of pure reflex I shot a beam of energy out of my hand and it was a direct hit. Metal stumbeled around
until he got steady again. Suddenly he stopped and stared behind me.
"Illogical, does not compute, data bank incomplete!" He screamed. When I turned around I didn´t belive my eyes.
Hovering a few feet above the ground and pulsating with energy, was Sonic and Amy Hedgehog, my mom and dad.
"This time you can´t win Metal!" Dad said, while grinning.
"You have taken too much from us already!" Mom said, looking pissed beyond belief.
"Yeah, soon you´re nothing more then scrap metal!" I shouted. Then all three of us loaded an energy beam
and shot them at Metal Sonic.
The blast was unbeliveable and Metal quickly turned into a pile of smoking scrap. Mom and dad returned to their normal forms and then I rushed at them, hugging them both, while crying big tears of joy. Chaos turned around, weakened by the fact that he had brought Sonic and Amy out of their coma. He was just about to dissappear into the nearest drain when dad turned his head and said:
"Thanks for looking out for her."
Chaos simply nodded as answer and then floated through the drain.
Four weeks later Sonic had, with help from Knuckels, Tails and Shadow, managed to rebuild their old house,
and of course they had a house-warming party. Knuckels and Tails were friends again and Sonic of course
had to catch up on what had changed while they were, as he said, laying around. As for Chaotica, she finally
got to live the life she had wanted with her own family.
"The Hedgehog Legacy will live on."
